Royal Pains has tapped transgender teen Nicole Maines for a very special episode, E! News has learned. Airing June 23 at 10 p.m., “The Prince of Nucleotides” sees Dr. Hank (Mark Feuerstein) treat Anna, a transgender teenage choreographer whose hormones may be endangering her health.

Fans who missed the show live or on the film festival circuit will be pleased to find Mapa’s signature sass intact. “As a gay family, we want the same things that everybody else does,” he quips at one point. “The only difference is, we’re gay, so we want nicer things.”
As a side note, Mapa also hopes the show inspires more same-sex couples to consider the foster care system in their quest to become parents. Though he supports couples who opt for foreign adoption or surrogacy (“There’s nothing wrong with that. I think you should get your kids any way you can”), Mapa says drawing attention to adoption of older children is “really part of his crusade.” He said it is not only is it more financially viable for less-affluent couples, but also for a viable alternative for those who “don’t feel a biological imperative” to carry on the family tree.

When was the last time a riotous, raunchy standup comedy act melted your heart and left you bawling like a baby? Grab a hankie (or 12) and check out the new Showtime special Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy (premiering Friday, June 12, 10/9c), in which Filipino actor Alec Mapa (Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Devious Maids) hilariously details how he and his husband, Jamie Hebert, who is white, came to adopt Zion, a five-year-old black boy, and become a family “that looks like the last two minutes of It’s a Small World.” Mapa gave us the sweet deets.
Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy premieres on Showtime tonight, at a moment when the Supreme Court is considering gay marriage, and Michigan just made it legal to deny LGBT families a chance to provide stable homes for the stateâs 13,000 children in foster care.
âI just couldn’t take conservative pundits passing judgment on LGBT families any longer,” Alec explains why he created his award-winning one-man show. âI couldn’t take hearing that my marriage wasn’t legitimate or that gay adoption was harmful to children. Creating and performing this show was a way to beak down that hateful narrative and replace it with an authentic truthful telling of how my husband and I created our family through foster adoption. The main message is my family’s not all that different from yours. We all want the same things. The only difference is we’re gay, so we want nicer things.â

I first saw the film âBaby Daddyâ last year when it hit the festival circuit and I expected to laugh at the biting, spot-on comedy of Alec Mapaâs stand-up but what surprised me was the heartfelt depth of the portrayal of family in the film.
Mapa, known for roles on shows like âUgly Bettyâ and âSwitched at Birth,â lets the cameras into his personal life with his partner, Jamie Hebert, and how life changed when they adopted 5-year old, Zion and donât be surprised if you donât walk away with a clearer understanding of what a family is in 2015.
I talked to the always engaging Mapa last week about the film, which is set to air on Showtime this Friday, as well as his role on the new season of the Lifetime soapy hit, âDevious Maids.â
