Stewart R. Mott, RIP

Andrea James

A few years ago, I got a rather amazing note via a high-end matchmaking service. I was invited to Bermuda by Stewart Mott for a weekend date. Now, being an ultra-liberal, I knew exactly who he was. The dude was on Nixon’s Enemies List (the original short list, as was a founder of the ad agency at which I worked). That is quite a pedigree!

Stew owned a castle and was quite the cutting-edge thinker and apparently had a thing for younger women. He sent me a lot of funny emails with couplet rhymes…

noting our age difference:

When in ‘73 Nixon was up to his tricks,

you were merely at the age of six !

I won’t share many other details, but the notes were, shall we say, colorful…

Bermuda beckons and I reckon that you

would have both hands full with a devil like Stew.

I am sure he was right. At the time, I had already met someone through that service and decided not to go. Plus, he could have been my father. Plus, I hadn’t gotten into my whole history and didn’t really feel like doing it via email. In retrospect, I regret not going greatly, if not just to hang out with a 20th-century icon of activist philanthropy.

Outfest Board of Directors

<a href="http://www.outfest.org/fest2008/index.html" title=”Andrea JamesAndrea James

I was recently unanimously elected to the Board of Directors for Outfest.

One year ago, I attended my first Outfest event when they screened our short film Casting Pearls. The whole experience was first-rate, and I was also deeply inspired by their Legacy Project restoring important LGBT cinema and media. They also have several other great programs, including Outfest Wednesdays, special screenings, and other important support for emerging talent, including Screenwriting Labs and the Fusion initiative for more ethnically and culturally diverse representations.

I’ll be at most upcoming Outfest events, including tomorrow’s launch party, so stop by and say hi! I really look forward to serving the LGBT film community!

Be sure to come to lots of great films with trans themes, including a documentary on Trinidad:

Appearance on Fox News segment

Discussing hair removal on Fox News, May 21, 2008.

It’s summertime, which means I have been getting lots of media inquiries about hair removal.  I mentioned the New York Times piece the other day, and I appeared on Fox News recently as well.

Though that consumer activism emerged from my trans activism, it’s always fun to talk about it because I can’t recall the last time trans issues came up in an interview. When it does, I always point out that this is one of many ways that the trans community helps non-trans people by providing valuable information.

Los Angeles Pride Parade pics

Logo sponsored a Transamerican Love Story car in the LA Pride parade. Star Calpernia Addams, host Alec Mapa, FTM suitor Jim Howley, and sassy sidekick me had a great time! Thanks to all who came down and threw us a wave or ran up to the car to snap a pic or say something nice.

Alec Mapa’s dogs have an important role in his newest show’s finale. Here I am celebrating after the premiere with Alec’s husband Jamie and their two furry superstars.

New York Times piece on hair removal

I’m quoted in today’s New York Times about hair removal for teenagers.

Skin Deep: Zapping Teenage Torment

Anna Jane Grossman

June 5, 2008

Laser hair removal, some say, should be a last resort. ā€œI suggest kids first try bleaching, waxing or shaving or plucking,ā€ said Andrea James, who for six years has run HairTell.com, a site about hair removal. Most people in the forum reported positive results; more than six who posted said they had experienced second- and third-degree burns.

It would obviously be great if people didn’t make fun of other people because of the amount of hair they have, or any other physical characteristic. But that’s not how it works, especially for teenagers. If it can boost someone’s self-esteem during that critical period of socialization, I do not see the harm in a cosmetic procedure that can vastly improve one’s social standing and self-esteem. Ask anyone whose nickname was ā€œunibrowā€ or ā€œmustache girlā€ or ā€œsasquatchā€ or ā€œmissing linkā€ in school, and they will tell you something different than those whose facial or body hair was not a standout characteristic.

‘The Sensei’ red carpet video

Andrea James

Last month I went to the premiere of The Sensei. The director has just released a video of the premiere, which was a really uplifting event. Be sure to check out the film at Newfest and Frameline this month.
