Yes, Calpernia Addams is the new bachelorette! Logo recently greenlit a new reality series starring the actress/activist called Transamerican Love Story to air in February. On the show, Calpernia will choose from eight men living together in a Los Angeles-area home, and, unlike some other shows I could name (and I will: There’s Something About Miriam), all of these bachelors know Calpernia is trans.

Transamerican Love Story news release

Logo has just made the first announcement about the new unscripted series we have been filming since late October. They’ve titled it Transamerican Love Story, and it stars Calpernia as a bachelorette looking for love as eight men vie for her affection. Alec Mapa (currently a regular on both Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives) is the hi-larious host.

I have the only acting role, as I play Calpernia’s friend and confidante who cares about her.

I keed, I keed. No acting needed. Who doesn’t like Calpernia? She’s America’s Transsexual Sweetheart™!

I’m also excited because this should finally put to rest all the rumors that we are a romantic couple! Ewww!

If you would have asked me a year ago if I would ever be on-camera for something like this, I’d say no way, but the team Logo put together is handling it really well. It’s being produced through the same folks who did the college transition series Transgeneration. And when Fox decided to premiere the horrible ’There’s Something About Miriam‘ in America this fall, I felt this was a chance to show that plenty of nice guys have no problem dating trans women. In fact, that’s probably the most groundbreaking part of the show. Very few men have ever talked about that on camera. So, I feel the show is going to have a very interesting mix of silliness and charm and dramz and lulz. People always assume Calpernia and I are really serious because we are activists and like to help people, but we take very little (especially ourselves) too seriously. I’m excited to put that misconception to rest, too.

It’s slated for February, but it’s all super-secret! We’ll let you know as much as we can, but we can’t divulge any of the juicy details! The press release is linked below.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network

Calpernia and I went to an event last night for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a group seeking to lift the ban on gays in the military by repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

New Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis was on hand to discuss the initiative to lobby the legislature.

One statement by Aubrey that really stood out:

By law, one branch of the government is required to discriminate in a way that would be prosecuted if perpetrated at any other branch.

He sees this as a straight-up civil rights issue that will require the same kind of bipartisan support that led to civil rights gains in the 1960s. There’s currently a lawsuit moving forward regarding the constitutionality of the ban. One of the plaintiffs, David Hall, was at the event. He was in an elite Air Force training program when he was ratted out by a classmate. He had the highest ranking of all the Air Force ROTC juniors in his detachment when he was forced out, and the man he was seeing, another top cadet, was also discharged.

Since this issue will not be resolved via executive order, we can’t just hope for the next president to be forward-thinking. It’s going to take years of lobbying to get the votes on both sides of the aisle in the legislature. That needs to happen while the cases move forward.
