Steve Pride radio interview

imru

Calpernia and I are doing press for Transamerican Love Story and had a chance to see our good friend Steve Pride for his live show at KPFK studios.

We were pleasantly surprised to see our friend Jorja Fox there promoting her newest production, a fabulous Dusty Springfield retrospective starring Kirsten Holly Smith. Stay Forever: The Life and Music of Dusty Springfield starts February 7 and runs on selected days through the 24th at the LA Gay & Lesbian Center.

And yes, I should at least put on a little slap and run a brush through my hair, even though it’s radio.

My new Advocate article: Life Without Puberty

The Advocate has just published my newest piece on hormone blockers for minors, the trans movement’s new frontier.

This issue also has the Best. Cover. Ever.

Many transgender people have just one regret: not transitioning sooner. That may soon be a thing of the past as a growing number of trans kids turn to puberty-blocking hormones.

Trans Sister Tales wrap-up

Thanks to all who came out for the show last night! It felt good to get back on stage after an extended absence. There’s something very focusing about live theater that’s good to do now and then. My piece was called “There’s Something I Need to Tell You,” which I explain in the piece is the clichĂ© set-up line for telling someone you’re trans. It starts off all serious, as if I am about to tell someone, but then I break into what is essentially a comedy set.

I gave some helpful pointers on how NOT to do it, based on my extensive personal experience, such as:

Never come out to win an argument: “Oh, yeah?? We’ll I’m a transsexual, so there!”

I told a few stories about people I have told, then wrapped it up all nice and upbeat:

There’s something I need to tell you, and I say it with pride, not shame, and joy, not tears. I am proud to be counted among so many amazing women. There’s something I need to tell you. I am a transsexual woman!

Above is a photo with one of my biggest supporters, Michael. Sorry it’s a little out of focus – my camera is a little hard to use if you haven’t used it before.

It was great to reconnect with many people I haven’t seen in a long time!

Pic of the Day: Tendril and Drape

More evidence of the speed at which plants grow out here. This tendril seemed to appear almost overnight in the back garden, climbing up the curtain. Taken 18 January 2008 in Los Angeles, California.

Superboring story about my recycling

I ordered a new blue recycling bin the other day from the city because my old one had nearly disintegrated. Because I am a geek, I was very excited to get it. The city just started recycling plastic grocery bags and styrofoam in addition to the old stuff. I’m a pretty low-impact kind of chick environmentally, so after separating recyclables, most of my trash is cat litter and Q-Tips. Anywho, the new one has this new sticker on it that says “scavenging prohibited” and threatening trash-pickers (they prefer “freelance recyclers”) with fines up to $500 and jail time up to 6 months. I guess it makes sense that the city wants to keep my trash in their revenue stream, but it’s a little scary that my garbage becomes property of the city as soon as I put it in the bin.
