Alec Mapa fundraising for BABY DADDY, a comedy special/documentary on gay parenthood

LOS ANGELES, CA – April 29, 2013 — Actor and comedian Alec Mapa has launched a fundraiser to bring his award-winning one-man show BABY DADDY to screens worldwide. The documentary will include his stand-up special as well as behind-the-scenes looks at how Alec’s life has changed since he and his husband adopted a child through the foster care system.

Mapa said, “I love live theater and stand-up, but this film will allow my show to reach a wider audience, including those who prefer to view entertainment without pants on.”

Mapa and his husband Jamison Hebert have been very active in promoting LGBT adoption since adopting their son Zion through the foster care system in 2010. They are one of the families portrayed in a national adoption awareness campaign for the “Raise a Child” organization (raiseachild.us), have done press interviews, spoken on numerous panels, and received awards for raising foster and adoption awareness in the LGBT community.

Last year, Mapa and his family starred in “Family Restaurant,” a children’s film for kids with gay and lesbian parents. That project, which features puppets and children with gay and lesbian parents, is currently on the festival circuit. It’s scheduled to be used in educational programs in schools starting in the fall. Andrea James, who directed “Family Restaurant” and produced it with Hebert, has signed on to direct the Baby Daddy project. James said, “We had incredible fun working on the kid’s show last year, so we wanted to follow up with another project on a topic so close to our hearts.”

The film will be produced by Thought Moment Media. Hebert said, “Last year, we had such a great response to fundraising through Kickstarter for “Family Restaurant.” We wanted to do something even more ambitious this year while continuing to spread the message of foster and adoption by gays and lesbians not only to our LGBT community, but also to the wider world. We know there are many people who want to support a film like this and its timely message.”

Mapa plans to make the film available to backers as a digital download, and he’s come up with some creative rewards for backers, including homemade cookies, memorabilia, and accompanying backers to dinners and amusement parks. “This project is all about finding the humor and joy in life, and I love my fans, so I wanted to thank them for their support in creative ways. Besides, I work in Hollywood, so I’ve done a lot worse things for money.”
