Two Spirits: Sexuality, Gender, and the Murder of Fred Martinez
Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16 by a man who bragged to his friends that he “bug-smashed a fag.” But Fred was part of an honored Navajo tradition – the “nadleeh” or “two-spirit”, who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. Through telling Fred’s story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America’s indigenous peoples have long embraced. Preceded by: The Shoes of Aristeu (Os Sapatos de Aristeu)

Calpernia snapped this after we finished secondary filming on our new short “Transproofed” yesterday. Now that it’s all in the can, we are going to lock picture and start on finalizing effects and color correction. “Transproofed” will premiere in 2009.

The gem of this collection is Casting Pearls (∆∆∆∆∆), featuring actress Calpernia Addams (Transamerican Love Story) as she undergoes a series of auditions for roles, some humiliating, some moronic, none especially worthwhile. Brilliantly played by Addams directly into the camera, it is a terrifically funny jab at Hollywood stereotypes.

Filmmaker Hector Ceballos is working on a new film and is looking for people who can support the project. It’s called Remember Me in Red. He writes:

I am fundraising for my thesis project which is about a transgender woman named Alma Flora who dies and the conflict that occurs before her burial. Her best friend Fidelia arranges a tribute to her friend’s life as a woman, but when the family arrives unexpectedly from Mexico they make the choice to bury Alma Flora as a man. My lead is Mariana Marroquin. Maria Roman of Trantasia fame is playing Alma Flora.

Director Edward Gunawan just announced that the short film “Laundromat” won the audience award at the Fresno Reel Pride 2008: The Fresno LGBT Film Festival. Calpernia and I have supporting roles in the film, which follows a young gay couple. After a chance encounter with an older man at the laundromat, they realize that the little things mean nothing and everything when it comes to love.
